A Vision
for
A Center for the Study of
The Historic House and Landscape

CONCEPT: Throughout the United States, there is
no academic center for research and dissemination of information on the
special problems and opportunities related to the historic house and its
related historic landscape. Within too many communities, whether
as an isolated structure or as a unit of a related neighbor, the historic
house is not recognized as a resource for improving the quality of human
life or the physical environment. Subsequently, these resources are
threatened and lost on a daily basis in the absence of programs designed
to help individuals and communities achieve the opportunities they represent.
The Founders Memorial Garden properties represent an opportunity to develop
a multi-faceted program of education and outreach to all levels of society,
from school children to civic leaders and municipal and state level decision
makers. Three program components are envisioned: (1) Educational
Programs, both on-site and elsewhere, (2) Research Programs on the nature
of the historic house and landscape, its problems, and potential solutions
to those problems, and (3) Information Dissemination, through publications,
web sites, and the development of educational programs for all levels of
society, as needed.
